Description
The RetroN 5 Game Collection is loaded onto a 32GB SD card and features nearly complete game collections hacks, and homebrew titles for: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES (Famicom), SNES (Super Famicom), Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), as well as the Sega Master System and Game Gear. (Master System and Game Gear requires the 3-in-1 expansion cartridge.) [See: Complete Directory List]
This, however, isn’t as simple as just plugging the card in and picking a game. This unusual emulator box it isn’t loading game ROMs, but instead running converted IPS patch files, thus requires a few extra steps:
- To unlock an emulator you must own one working cartridge from each system type you want to play. (It can be any cartridge, but you have to have at least one.) ex. If you want to play Genesis/Mega Drive games, you first need to insert a Genesis cartridge and allow the RetroN 5 to switch to its Genesis emulator.
- Navigate to Game Menu, Game Specific Settings, Select Patch, then navigate to the game you want to load. (For the same system as your inserted cartridge).
- Be sure Separate saves for patch is turned On.
- Back out to the main menu and you can now hit Play.
Compatibility is not 100%, even with original cartridges. Cheats are hard to get working, if at all. Some reproduction cartridges also will not load correctly. The wireless controller is functional, but also not as crisp as an original gamepad. (Though original wired gamepads also work if you have them available.) It’s not one of my favorite systems, but it can pack a lot of games in one place!
